chart and a cookbook

If you are just starting out with astrology, or you've been studying for decades as I have, all you really need is a tool to display an accurate astrology chart and Robert Hand's book "Planets in Transit : Life Cycles for Living" (1976)(1).

However, Hand has one blind spot due to when he published his lifetime of research: Chiron.

I’m writing a short, corrective post today during a Chiron square with my own Venus.

As you know, a square can feel crabby.

I went looking for a fresh Chiron Venus perspective earlier in the day and faced long lists of search results where every astrologer had the same-same schtick I’ve been seeing for years.

I’m fed up with the popular astrology litany of Chiron representing pain.

Chiron was discovered to conscious awareness in 1977. What happened that year?

Star Wars made a debut and forever changed storytelling. What did George Lucas incorporate which changed how we tell Story?

tragedy of ending childhood

Remember the movie?

Luke Skywalker:

  • saw the burned bodies of his foster parents
  • discovered his evil father was Darth Vader, employed by an Emperor Sith asshole
  • had his right hand chopped off by Darth and picked up a geeky prosthetic
  • learned his mother had died in childbirth
  • eventually realized the princess he mistakenly had a crush on is his biological sister

Wow, could there be more pain?

Aren’t these the very things astrologers go on and on about when Chiron is the topic?

The pain of separateness doesn’t make you special. Everybody experiences being dumped to fend for ourselves.

When one or both parents aren’t there to hold your hand, curb your questions, or kiss the boo-boo, you experience life directly.

How painful is real life, you might ask?

Have you seen an astrologer talk about freedom for Individuation?

pilot yourself

How real life gets depends on what you want to create yourself to be.

Playing French Horn in a world-class chamber orchestra requires years of practice.

Playing with Jazz structures on French Horn is in an entirely different league.

Flying crop dusters can lead to flying star cruisers — although you may have to develop the tech for a space cruiser first!

Luke became a great swamp rat pilot and droid geek.

He fell in with a mysterious mage who taught him about developing his own superpowers.

He learned the “I’m not the pre-programmed mindless slave of Society you’re looking for,” mind trick.

He figured out for himself how to blow up a Death Moon — by trusting himself.

Whether or not the title was earned from leading one successful mission, Luke became a general in the rebellion.

Although he continues to pout, whine, and waffle between moments of glory, the journey Luke Skywalker eventually undertakes is Individuation.

wave the wand

Let’s look at another widely read and experienced world, that of Harry Potter.

Harry has a scar on his forehead, which aches painfully when his nemesis is around.

And what else do we know about Harry Potter?

Almost every other day and night in his adventures is free from pain.

What else do we know?

  • Harry’s parents were murdered when he was too young to walk
  • Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black, escapes from a prison for wizards and is murdered before the two of them can create a shared sense of home
  • Harry’s leading supporters — the head of the college and the potions professor — are both murdered
  • his custodial relatives are horrible and abusive to him
  • eventually, Harry learns even his biological father was arrogant, did pranks, and could be cruel to peers
  • the outdoorsman giant, Rubeus Hagrid — the closest direct mentor for Harry, Ron, and Hermione, is framed for crimes
  • recurring threat from the murderer Voldemort

Everybody Harry could have relied on to have a happy, normal childhood is denied. Why?

So Harry can figure out how to be amazing in his own right:

  • Harry develops his own magick through necessity and experimentation
  • he broods and puzzles his way through each academic year, eventually solving mysteries and helping make the world of magick a better place
  • forms a chosen family with Ron and Hermione
  • learns advanced magick, such as the Patronus charm, by facing his fears and by facing mortality
  • takes leadership responsibilities among his peers at every crisis, from retrieving Neville’s Rememberall from a class bully, to defeating Voldemort’s various schemes attempting to return
  • develops his own moral code independent of authority figures

The journey Harry Potter takes every wizardly school year is Individuation.

become cleverly amazing

Imagine for a moment the squeal from the speakers of having flat-handed the wailing mic onto the hard floor. Let the mic deal with the pain of being dropped and celebrate your freedom.

Let's look closer at the mythology of Chiron.

What popular astrologers have been parroting since 1977 is a tiny part of the mythology of Chiron: a poison tipped arrow shot by an apprentice, which struck Chiron in a leg; a betrayal of trust; failure to learn the lessons of safety in tactical combat, and the proper use of poisons.

What has been ignored is Chiron’s study and self-development in:

  • mathematics
  • music arrangement
  • martial arts
  • archery
  • morality
  • leadership
  • prophecy
  • tactics
  • strategy
  • shamanism
  • medicine of herbs, oils, spices, and physical therapy

Chiron developed her systems of knowledge from direct experience and implemented methodologies which outlasted her physical form(3).

Because of Chiron’s mastery of multiple disciplines and practices, Chiron mentored heroes such as Jason, Asclepius, Achilles, and Heracles (aka Hercules).

So the next time you worry yourself about Chiron in natal aspect, transit, or synastry to Sun, Mercury, Venus, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto, drop the “I’m hurting” mic, get off the amateur performance stage, and go figure out how cool you can be.

Whether you had a choice — or have a moment when you actually control who lives or dies or abandons you — the focus of the Chiron myth is on the freedom to develop yourself, your life practice, and your systems of knowledge.

In doing so, you become attractively, charismatically authentic.

myopic focus on anguish

Focusing only on the pain of the Chiron myth is like zeroing in on Pluto abducting and hiding herself from her controlling mother, while ignoring sensitivity, enduring loyalty, and an emotional talent for accruing wealth.

Dwelling on Chiron's pain is like obsessing about how Saturn cut the sack off Uranus, while ignoring the skill of focusing on tasks necessary for realizing, step-by-step, your next ambition.

Emphasizing Chiron's pain is like focusing on Venus having sea slime on her bare feet when she stepped out of the oyster, instead of embracing the skills of adoration, scorn, and self-love.

Concentrating on Chiron's pain is like focusing on the Sun melting the wings of your stellar performance and falling from public view, instead of celebrating the gravity, warmth, and diurnal rhythm of your heart.

There is another astrological point of view on Chiron, but you won't find the reference in a search result.

Indeed, even reading the Magi Society's book "Magi Astrology : The Key to Success in Love and Money" (1999)(2) won't give you access to the cookbook style handy reference we find in Hand's "Planets in Transit."

I can give you a quick tour, but first consider these questions:

Is Chiron only about the pain of loss?

Would you watch a movie entirely about Luke Skywalker’s robotic hand?

Would you read a book totally about Harry Potter’s scar?

Are you going to continue the pop song chorus about Chiron’s leg being stabbed by a poison arrow fired from an apprentice’s bow?

Magi and Chiron

In the twenty years after Chiron's discovery, Magi astrologers took a different approach by actually studying a large enough dataset to derive a fresh perspective on Chiron.

Except for the square aspect being essentially at cross-purposes, Magi astrology suggests Chiron and Venus in aspect, transit, or synastry is a top fortunate connection — particularly for gender females.

Magi astrology suggests Chiron is the most important planet in creating long-term relationships, and may be the leading indicator of a soul mate and of marriage.

Well! Let’s add a dose of reality to the Magi viewpoint: there are, in fifty years of living, only two years when Chiron will trine your natal Venus, and one year when Chiron will conjunct your Venus.

If you live longer, there may be additional opportunities as Chiron takes another lap around the zodiac.

People born in those years may be mutual soul mate candidates. Someone from those years will have a Chiron placement which your Venus adores.

However, since Chiron’s journey is fifty years long, your potential soul mates' ages may differ greatly from yours.

If you are open to one-sided soul mates, twice a year, on average, Venus will trine your natal Chiron. Once a year Venus will conjunct your Chiron. Venus may make one pass, or three passes.

Since someone born every year will have a Venus in an adoring aspect to your Chiron, you may find the occasional person from every age group who is charmed by your authenticity.

Do you have authenticity? How do you develop your authenticity?

Chiron’s charisma

Chiron can be charismatic. There is a joy to systems which work: systems of health, systems of daily life, systems of transportation, systems of learning.

When you meet a person with a Chiron who has created systems for themselves, you may be attracted by the earthy confidence, yet mystified by how oddly unique the person’s systems are.

That’s because she built her own systems of lifestyle. She may have been mentored, yet the systems she put in place are authentic to her as part of her journey of Individuation — her systems work.

You may think her capable systems are for poking fun at, but first ask yourself if you even have a system of your own to compare with hers? What might you learn from hers?

In contrast, when meeting someone who wails incessantly about the pain of living without the systems their parents used, or dwell on the pain of losing someone romantically who embodied elegant systems of living, how do you feel?

If both of you are feeling pain, you might have encountered someone to commiserate with while both of you persist in failing to Individuate.

If you are working on your own authenticity, you may feel the tug of the other person’s pain, especially during a challenging transit such as a Chiron squaring your Venus. However, if the other person doesn’t work on their shit while you work on yours, eventually you may decide to shake the other person off.

Or you may have reached a place where you just don’t have patience for the broken record of pain.

I take your impatience — like mine — as the sign we can dig into practical approaches to transits from Chiron, or transits to Chiron in your natal chart.

We can also take a fresh look at what makes relationships grounded in the human Animal much more satisfying than what may be popular at the moment.

the Earth Energies

Venus, Chiron, and Saturn are the Earth Energies in astrology. Each represents significant realities about being a human Animal.

Among these three energies, each has a characteristic indicator:

  • if you feel a black depression, your Saturn energy is off the mark; explore how to better structure your life, and be more selective about what you focus your time on
  • if you feel self-loathing, your Venus energy is whacked; explore ways to implement the five practical tools of self-caress, discrimination, scorn, adoration, and afterglow
  • if you are still feeling the pain of separateness, your Chiron energy is stunted; explore ways to become more authentically you — set up systems and learn practical skills

The takeaway message: if you are feeling pain, black depression, or self-loathing, know these are helpful clues.

Your mission, should you choose happiness in this lifetime, is to:

  • get into and enjoy your own body
  • become your own practitioner in a system of living authentic to you
  • pick your battles and the timing of your practical steps for a lifetime of successes

When you get in the groove with these important Earth Energies, you are going to discover a world of relationships which previously had seemed unreachable.

Chiron square Venus

The pain in the ass for me today came from doom-scrolling through hundreds of astrology posts on Chiron which are still parroting about pain.

I felt the frustration of the transit square from realizing hundreds of astrology posts presented the same fractional message about the energy of Chiron.

I didn’t see a single astrology post where an astrologer had gotten beyond the pain trope to find the joys of becoming an Individual — freed from overbearing parents, whining partners, and helpless infant emotional perspectives.

Not one astrologer was glad they freed themselves to become wise at the practice of practical living. And on being authentic?

If the astrologer is echoing every other astrologer about Chiron, you aren’t learning anything about becoming charismatically authentic.

Chiron: get off your arse and develop your own systems; become more you.

Venus: gentleness and kindness are for yourself, first; scorn anyone who gets between you and your self-love.

Square, opposition, inconjunct: get out of your own way; there are multiple facets to your personality, and where your Venus is in your chart is only one facet — make room for all your facets.

Trine: a slippery inevitability to a natal aspect, transit, or synastry contact; research the conjunction for a sense of how to better balance the energies.

question to wrap the rant

What I just took you through is from many years of practical experience and thoughtful musing. You may find my system of astrology inflammatory, unsettling, or merely odd.

Do you have a system of astrology — which you have banged up from your own practical experiences — to compare mine to?

Or are you borrowing someone else's system of understanding, and how painful is that for you today?

Enjoy the perspective!

For the love of your owlish knowing nimble canny authenticity,
